I think I am now prepared to divest myself of anything and everything Star Wars that I own. For a price, of course...

Well, some good news is that, he redid that gawd awful Jabba/Han scene. Man, that makes me cringe every time I see it, it is so incredibly fucking bad.
Would have been better without, but...if it had to stay I am glad they have retouched it. I hope they got rid of teh eye bugging out/step on teh tail thing. Jabba looked like a damn loony toon.
I hate that they introduced him before Jedi, but I hated it much much more that they introduced him as such a freakish cartoon putz. I mean, in that case, what is to fear later in Jedi?

Well, that one I understand. Jabba WAS in teh original Star Wars. That scene only got cut due to time and budget crunches. Some of teh stuff I don't like are things that Lucas put in for no reason other than he could. teh stuff like teh Ronto in Mos Eisley. That stuff was just a "hey look at what I can do!" kind of crap. Not part of teh original vision. teh Hayden Christiansen thing though. That makes me wanna puke. teh whole point of teh ghost of old Anakin was supposed to be that he was finally redeemed. Not how he looked before he went all assish.

From what I understood, that scene was left out because it was unfinished and Lucas didn't like teh idea of a guy in a costume. When teh digital technology was there, he opted to animate, but after viewing teh finished product, Lucas should have had teh sense of mind to realize that teh rendering was lousy and teh character portrayed as a rediculous baffoon. A character he then expects us to be intimidated by in Jedi. A character who is supposed to be a formidible foe.
As a story teller, he should have known better.

Yeah teh guy in teh rubber suit sucked. Lucas wanted to substitute in a maquette monster, a la teh Rancor in Jedi, but time and budget cut that off. And yes, I agree that Lucas did a shitty job of re-instating Jabba. He did a shitty job of more than a few things. What I meant was I liked teh IDEA of putting it back. I don't like teh way they did it either. (they did it better in teh books, but teh continuity from teh books have gone down teh crapper thanks to teh prequals) I agree that it looked too cartoony, and they made him too comical. Hopefully they'll have fixed that this time.

teh Jabba scene in ANH was originally left out for a lot of reasons, not teh least of them being that Lucas had no idea at teh time what he wanted Jabba to look like. He was thinking something big and hairy. Which is why he used a stand-in with a big fur coat. Anyways, this idea is starting to sound more and more appealing compared to teh reality.

In other George Lucas news... "THX 1138" was just re-released yesterday(Tues. Sept 15) restored and such... not sure if they've made any other changes though, and i haven't seen it in teh first place, though i have read a few different articles about it which made it sound kind of interesting (to me at least)
as far as Star Wars is concerned... my bro-in-law works at blockbuster, and can rent teh movies before they are released, which he has done, so in teh next couple of days (before monday, i believe) Imma try and spy those to see if they fuct them up any more than they did previously, or if they fixed them...

There was an article about teh DVD release of THX 1138 in this months' Wired. While I was looking for teh article to share, I found yet another about teh theatrical release. Other than Digital remastering, teh article explains that he added some cityscapes and backgrounds and padded his crowd scenes with more crowd. This is a good movie. Eery. Definitely suggest it. I rented it a long time ago when I was on a Robert Duvall kick. I'd be curious to watch it again to see whether teh changes he's made register to me. They sound like pretty subtle tweaks.

I just hate that he went back and changed Return of teh Jedi so.
'It's an inconsistency, he teh old Anakin and teh new look too different'
It's a movie! Anything that's fictional is bound to have some inconsistencies. Why didn't he go back and change Obi-Wan's line about how Yoda instructed him then? That would just be one step too far? Or because they aren't confident in changing Alec Guinesses voice.
I kind of get teh feeling that if he could, he would change that line.
And I hate that.

Yeah, I was reading an article today. Apparently Mark Hammill was pissed at Lucas and said "Just leave them alone!" when he heard Lucas was changing things AGAIN! Hamill was most upset when Lucas changed Luke's fall in Empire. Originally Luke fell silently in a zen-like Jedi fall. Then Lucas changed it to make him scream. I hate that Lucas' attitude is "It's my movie I can do what I want. Nyah Nyah." teh article also quoted somebody (I can't remember who) that said. Just wait. In another 10 years he'll change it again. I for one am gonna horde my ORIGINAL trilogy tapes. My CBS Fox ones that I got BEFORE they released teh THX enhanced editions in 1995. Someday I'll get a DVD burner and put them on DVD so that they shall be preserved. I just hope they last until that time. Before Lucas ruins them entirely.

that's actualy exacly where i read about it too... i wuv that magazine ME TOO! It's my favorite. I got a subscription for a gift and I've been hooked ever since. It is great: Scientific American meets Entertainment Weekly, and it's cheep. Can't beat it. And G, I'm with you about directors changing their shit years later. I feel teh same way about what Spielberg did to ET in teh last couple. I wish there was some way to save films from their directors. It is their creation sure, but both ET and teh first trilogy are cultural institutions that don't belong solely to Spielberg and Lucas anymore. At some point they just hafta say "this is what I did in teh past with what I had, and it was a wonderful accomplishment. There are things I would do differently now, but these movies still entertain decades later. I rawk." At least I wish. teh bastards. At some point those movies are ours too. They have been more than merely shared with us, and at this point we are teh ones keeping them alive. We make them an institution. These kind of changes are like graffiti on a monument. It doesn't matter if it's teh creator doing teh vandalizing. It wouldn't be as bad if we had teh option to view teh films with teh changes vs. teh original films. Then he could replace Yoda with dancing Kermit for all I care. And why a young Annikin, but not a young Obi Wan? Why not chuck Ewen McGregor in there too? Be consistent for fuck's sake!
