What is Autism? Autism is a developmental disability that affects, often severely, a person's ability to communicate and socially interact with others. It is four times more prevalent in males than females. Currently, autism is believed to affect 1 in every 166 people. teh rate of people being diagnosed with autism has increased substantially over teh past two decades. Although this may be in part due to improved diagnostic techniques and to changes in teh criteria for autism spectrum disorders (see below), teh majority of experts agree these changes are not enough to explain teh epidemic rates at which autism is being diagnosed. Autism Spectrum Disorders is an umbrella term that includes classic autism (also known as Kanner's autism or Kanner's syndrome), Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). Autism is considered a spectrum disorder because teh number and intensity of teh symptoms people with autism display may vary widely. However, all people with autism demonstrate impairments in teh following three areas: communication, social relationships and restricted patterns of behavior. teh spectrum ranges from those who are severely affected, less able, and dependent on others to those who are of above-average intelligence and independent, yet lacking in social skills. source: cure autism nowalso you can support teh cause by checking out this stuff i'll be posting more soon.

normal people scare me, it's a documentary done from teh point of view of an autistic teen. deifinitely looks interesting since most documentaries that have been done on autism are done by "neurotypicals".

You know, I just read this thread before I went downstairs. I pecked around today's paper (yes, I know it's already 16 hours old!). Normally I wouldn't notice human interest stories, but it looked like a girl was pulling a boy's head off. I sat down to read it, and thought of this thread. This story, on teh front page, is about how one family has began to help their autistic son to adapt. It's not teh best writing, but I expect that from teh people they employ. You can read it here, and see their workout regime here.
