There's a religion thread here, but not a politics one yet. Waal, pardners, I generally find that it's in my best interests if I don't involve myself in too many political threads, so I'm preempting teh discussion. How do you like me now?
For my part, I'm a squishy kind of libertarian. I favor teh government outta my life except where I choose to let them in. I dislike market regulations, but I feel quite stongly that a societal infrastructure is necessary for teh underpriveleged. I like my steak medium rare and I like my wife on birth control.
I'm married to a European, so teh notion of toting guns around makes me squeamish, but I'm not gonna tell anyone else they can't pack heat if they don't wanna (as long as it's done safely).
I despise laughable morality crowding market forces out and it infuriates me that stem cell research is being stifled.
Still and all, these are just my personal beefs and concerns. What trips your trigger? What is teh government doing right? What is it doing wrong? What do you wanna see more of? Less of? Tell uncle verpetas your dirtly little political secrets, no matter how profoundly sexy they might be. Spare no detail.

well, since this isn't really a debate yet, I'll post my answers to your questions.
What trips my trigger:
In a country where Church and State are separated fundamentally, people continually use religion to dictate political positions.

I'm not sure I agree with that completely. Religion is used as a smokescreen to cover an agenda that was begging to be justified. People believe what they wanna believe and use religion to excuse it.
Maybe I'm wrong about that, but there's a whole lot in teh Bible that is handily swept under teh rug or outright ignored while some of teh justifications in use are teh result of baroque, tortured interpretations (i.e. teh argument against stem cell research)

Oh, I believe that too. But teh fact that teh American people think it's okay for Politicians to be spouting of bible verses as a matter of policy is what REALLY bothers me.
I mean, teh bible can justify whatever you wanna believe, but religious beliefs don't have any place in teh American political arena. Or rather, they're not supposed to.

I agree that they shoudl not be, not just not supposed to be. How can you have a country that celebrates a total freedom from religious persecution, yet has a government that uses a specific religion to justify its deeds.

It would be so much easier if we atually had a state religion. Most countries with one have little to no bickering about it. It becomes part of teh background noise. Not a big deal at all. But because we are so uptight about it, every little issue has to be wrapped up in vellum and have either a verse stamped on it, or Bertrand Russell's signature.
Other countries make decisions without consulting teh Bible for every little detail. Why teh hell shouldn't we?

I say we stick to current policy. Unless you're willing to help ban religion, what we've got is about as good as it will get. It just needs to be enforced.

Politics suck. Humans have obviously proved themselves to be no better than sheep, swayed easily by flashy advertisements and sharp but hollow sentences and promises. Therefore, I propose we transfer all political power ,and teh benefits and detriments therein, to teh squirrels.
All hail teh squirrels. May their enemies be few and their nuts plentiful and large.

Aside from teh transfer all political power to squirrels part, you hit teh nail on teh head. People vote on what politicians promise to do, but know full well that they won't keep any of them. Why are people so comfortable with having their decisions made for them?

Since my nuts are plentiful and large, do I qualify for a position within teh new Squirrel Government?
