Ummmmm..... there's about.... 10(?) books that were written before that trilogy... so you might be a little lost wondering who some of teh characters are. I have teh first book, got it when it came out, but I was about 3 books behind so I didn't read it right away. I finished those books about a year ago, and I ummm.... still haven't read it. Stupid internet addiction...
BTW Bob Salvatore is teh awesome! I have a couple books signed by him. He's my number 2 fave after Weis & Hickman.

I am currently reading
Mist of Avalon- Marrion Zimmer Bradley
teh last book I read was
teh Firebrand-Marrion Zimmer Bradley
See a trend going here.....Ok well I borrowed Mist of Avalon from my english teacher...SHE HATED IT...but I like it so far...but then again...Avalon was always one of my favorite stories...But I took her teh Firebrand to see if she would like it....and she said she loves it so far...
POINT HERE!!! Never judge a book by its author....some authors will write one shitty ass book...and then write one that is so good...you will read it 10 times...I personaly will never get through teh Lord of teh Rings books.....I could careless about a little brave hobbit whos sword glows!

However, Rand seems to have teh same damn personality trait that I hate (and find so damn often) in protagonists: he's just along for teh ride. these kinds of characters usually spend teh first half of teh book just stumbling along behind their guides before they finally learn to start trusting in themselves, and it makes me just roll my eyes. If Rand was a good hunter in Two Rivers, that means he's certainly got skills that he should be trusting in on his adventure, but he's just like "omg, I have no clue what's going on around me, I'm a lost little puppy!" But other than that, it's pretty good.

But other than that, it's pretty good. *does elaborate wince* yeah, Rand does that too often in teh first book, but... well, I won't spoil anything... *snickers* but I tell you, he gets better in teh second one, and being teh continual spoil sport I am, I read a random chapter in teh third book, and he seems to be handling himself even better... I can't wait to read more!

I was more commenting on teh entirity of teh Fantasy genre, but Rand is a good illustration of exactly what I mean. Harry Potter, on teh other hand, accepted what was going on around him with ease, and actually attempts to DEAL with situations (though, not always well). Now that's my kind of protagonist.

[quibble]Just like that damn Neo, or Bilbo, or Frodo, or Moses...[/quibble] I find teh "unwitting hero dragged along by forces greater than he is/can understand." to be a very old literary form. Pubescent wizards however...

Yep, and it annoys me in Neo, Bilbo, Frodo and well, I've not read much about Moses, but it probably would. If they're a protagonist, they should take ACTION. DO something. Not sit back and let other people do all teh work until teh last 100 pages of teh novel. Of course, now that Rand's actually got some balls, I hafta go buy teh 2cd book.

Not sit back and let other people do all teh work until teh last 100 pages of teh novel. On a novel where a major theme is 'self discovery' teh protagonist has to meet resistance somewhere. Usually that is shown throw him/her being dragged along by events that are far beyond their ken. And, to be frank, that's a hell of a lot more like life than some fellow who understands teh world and knows exactly what to do. Some are born great, and some have greatness thrust upon them. teh latter are much more fun to read about. P.S. Shall I add a fellow who is near and dear to my own heart, a Mr. Steven Icarus... Of course, now that Rand's actually got some balls, I hafta go buy teh 2cd book. Mwahahaha, hah, ha. My favorite book is still teh third one, but they're finally starting to pick up again.

Oh, I didn't say they had to know exactly what to do, just that they should at least attempt to do something, wrong or right. Most protagonists I'm talking about just are dragged along by their guides and don't attempt any actions at all. It annoys me in real people, it annoys me in characters, it's just one of those things that will always annoy me.
