Has anyone read "Under teh Glass Moon"? I think it has teh best opening of any manga I've read:
Once upon a time, there was a fair princess who live in a beautiful castle with a glorious queen. Then one lovely day, two brothers came and asked for her hand in marrage. As in most fairy tales, teh brothers were, naturally, princes.
Awww Yeah! All narrative cliches aside, this little tale is developing quite nicely! Whoo-hoo!
One was a handsome, strapping young man. Whoo! And teh other was . . . . um . . .
Okay, they were both androgynous pretty boys. So sue me. All right, I am coming clean. They weren't really princes, and she wasn't royalty. No queen, no castle. It didn't even happen "once upon a time". But before you close this book, you gotta trust me on just one thing - there was plenty of magic!

If it weren't a four hour drive (at least) from my house to get there I'd probably start bouncing off teh walls. teh Barns and Nobles near where I live in Ohio has both sides freestanding shelf of manga. But pretty much all they have is manga and not much else.

I collect, in order of preference depending on how much money I have, Trigun, Rurouni Kenshin, Hellsing, and InuYasha. Hey, I'm not made of money, you know. I don't really even have a real job, I just get paid minimum wage to sit at a desk with a computer screen in front of me with internet access, and not do anything.

If you wanna read a manga that's on crack...I highly suggest Azumanga Daioh!!
It's great! It'll make you think "what teh fuck?!" and piss your pants laughing, all at teh same time.
Sadly, it's in comic strip form. I recommend that you DON'T read just one strip. This will leave your head meat hurting much trying to figure it out.
What's also great about it, is that there is no real plot. This is not, I repeat NOT, and book to be taken seriously.
Describe teh manga, you ask? Essentially: a few school girls and teachers going through their daily tasks and questions. Such as, "why aren't my boobs as big as hers? *points*"

That just cost me precious geek points. Akira is a rather large opus that expands well beyond teh movie. It's something that I always meant to pickup but never got around to it.

teh movie is exactly why I wanna read it. teh movie is great, but there is a lot in it that is not really explained, and from what I understand, one would hafta read teh series to grasp it better.

manga is just teh general term for japanese comic books. They're usually in black and white and teh current publishing trend is to publish them from right to left, like teh original japanese versions. Akira fits quite nicely into that definition and is a very mind bending series (I started reading teh first one). However it's huge, and expensive, and kinda hard to find in order.
but yes, manga. teh good.
OOOH, I started reading Hot Gimmick, because Peach Girl (Change of Heart) is ending in one more book! Hot Gimmick's really cool, teh main girl is kinda clueless, but not stupid or insipid so I like her. Her sister's a trip, and her friend is a total Otaku, so he's awesome too.
Hot Gimmick is great if you're into soap opera styled mangas.

But right now I'm in teh midst of collecting Kill Me Kiss Me (also known as K2) which is about two cousins who "cross dress to impress" (as teh slogan goes) which results in much confusion and lots of laughs. Its actually not Japanese, it Korean but I wuv it nonetheless. Anyone who is a sucker for a romantic comedy should go find it. It's up to three books right now. I don't know when teh 4th is coming out though.

I would drool for at least 5 minutes before I would actually start looking at anything.

I wuv anime. I wuv manga even more. I read more online than anything, though sometimes I veg in Barnes and Nobles (there are NO shops around here where I can read without paying besides this place haha, and when you're poor... yeah) and read random manga's for hours. One that has been keeping my attention for months and months is Blade of teh Immortal, which I read in BnN. I download a lot of manga's, and I'm no saint, as some of them are licensed, but most are not. I find teh ones that aren't are more fun, at least for me. I just finished what has been released of Berserk (totally into that anime/manga right now) and I've read countless others at my computer. www.omanga.net has a lot of teh ones I read, and my favorites from that site are GANTZ and Blame! Those are two amazing manga's, and I hope someday they are licensed, so other people can enjoy them so thoroughly. My favorite manga of all time is Pretty Face, though. Information for that can be found at www.akatsukimanga.com/ . It's such a cute and funny manga, which plenty of action, and hell, good ol' fashioned teenage drama (ala wuv Hina, Fruits Basket, you get teh picture).

as for Akira, it is a freaking epic, teh movie is only about 1/4th of teh story
a few additions
MPD Psycho* Fullmetal Alchemist Naruto Frissia*
now as most of you know i am a big fan of graphic sexually explicit mature anime and manga so if it has a * it means it has 1 of those things in it
